VEOLIA IN INDONESIA

Indonesia's Environmental Challenges

Indonesia faces significant environmental challenges despite its natural resources abundance. With 6% of the world's freshwater resources, the country paradoxically struggles with water access - only 30.27% of Indonesians had access to safe drinking water meeting international standards in 2022. Simultaneously, plastic waste management has become a critical issue, with the country generating approximately 6.8 million tons of plastic waste annually according to the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP). Much of this waste ends up in landfills or nature, with a significant portion reaching the oceans, making Indonesia one of the top 10 contributors to ocean plastic pollution globally. In response to these critical challenges, Veolia has established two major operations in Indonesia: a water treatment facility in Medan and the country's largest food-grade PET recycling plant, demonstrating its commitment to addressing both water access and plastic waste management issues.

This state-of-the-art plant produces up to 25,000 tons of food-grade recycled PET plastic annually, adhering to strict food safety standards and halal certification requirements. The facility has established a sustainable PET plastic bottle waste supply chain, while also focusing on social responsibility through improving collection centers and supporting informal waste collectors with training and safety equipment.

Drinking Water Treatment Facility

In the city of Medan, Veolia operates through PT. Tirta Lyonnaise Medan, a joint venture with the North Sumatra Municipal Water Company, to treat and distribute drinking water. Since 2001, this facility has delivered over 180 million cubic meters of clean water, currently supplying around 15% of the city’s population. Utilizing the Unit Compact Degremont (UCD) technology based on conventional water treatment processes, this plant represents a long-term commitment to improving water quality and access. The contract for this facility has been renewed through 2045, ensuring continued service and demonstrating the trust placed in Veolia's technical expertise and operational reliability.
